Note To Self

Every year on the 1st December I unpack the Christmas decorations. Every year I find a very useful note I’ve written to myself saying ‘These are the tree lights. Stop buying so many decorations.’

Other than saving me time and money and avoiding being tangled in a load of duff lights, there’s something lovely about receiving a note from yourself. It’s like a friendly voice from your past guiding you into your future.

I’m very against New Years resolutions but I am very keen on using the new year to think about what changes you would like to make over the next year.

Writing a note to your future self to read next December will set your intention for the year. What do you hope to achieve? What goals do you want to reach? What change do you want to see in your life over the coming year? Writing down what your intentions are for yourself make them much more likely to happen. In therapy anything that is a goal is written down. If it’s not, it’s very unlikely to happen.

So give yourself a little bit of time and write a note to yourself now to read a year from now. You are setting out your stall and giving yourself the best chance possible of making changes.

And remember to tell yourself which lights go on the tree. You’ll be so grateful on December 1st 2020. Trust me.

Happy New Year!
